The Hive | Portrait Documentary (2025) | Director, Editor

A short portrait documentary about a young Hmong man living in rural Northwestern Vietnam as he reconnects with his community’s tradition of beeswax batik through hunting and trading the local wild honey in the neighbouring Che Tao forest.

Making of The Hive

Who are Hmong people?

A sub-group of the Miao people, Hmong people live mainly in Southern China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. After 1975, many travelled to America, France and other counties, seeking refuge from years of conflict and persecution.

In the Mù Cang Chải district, the Hmong ethnic minority group make up 90 percent of the population at around 55,000 people. Living in the isolated Hoang Lien Son mountain range, they still continue to live a largely self-sufficient life, but have had to adapt to the increasingly changing environment surrounding them.
